Pelvic Health Physical Therapy

Both men and women can suffer from aggravating or painful symptoms of the pelvic floor and related structures. Many people don’t realize that physical therapy is an option. The pelvic floor is made of muscles and tendons, and is an integral part of the musculoskeletal system, providing support to your vital organs, back and hips. Patients often find a major improvement in quality of life following pelvic floor PT. At Saunders Therapy Centers, we have trained pelvic health specialists in Edina, St. Paul, and Maple Grove who can help.

Pelvic Health Physical Therapists at Saunders treat a variety of issues including:

  • Urinary incontinence, urgency or frequency
  • Bowel incontinence
  • Constipation

What To Expect At Physical Therapy:

Our therapist will complete a thorough exam in order to establish a plan of care that both you and your therapist agree will help you reach your goals.

Musculoskeletal Evaluation

Your exam will include an assessment of your posture, muscle flexibility and strength, pelvic and lumbar symmetry, and a pelvic floor muscle exam if appropriate.

Treatment

  • Manual Therapy: To restore pelvic and lumbar symmetry, reduce muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and address soft tissue restrictions.
  • Functional Re-training: Restore posture and body mechanics, correct faulty movement patterns, and train coordination of abdominal and pelvic floor muscles.
  • Exercise Instruction: Build strength or improve relaxation for the pelvic floor muscles, and improve bowel and bladder habits with lifestyle modifications or dietary adjustments.
  • Modalities: Biofeedback and/or electrical stimulation can be used to aid the exercise approach.

Expected Outcomes: Our goals are to treat incontinence in 3-6 visits, and pelvic pain in 6-9 visits.
