TMJ Physical Therapy Treatment

Our physical therapists provide management of head and neck problems with a team approach that includes the TMJ specialist or dental professional, physical therapist and other medical professionals as needed. We understand this is an essential part of treatment program for successful management of these conditions.

Temporomandibular joint disorders and facial pain can affect both men and women of all ages. TMJ disorders are problematic for many individuals because they affect several aspects of their daily lives including eating, talking, laughing, and other activities.

We effectively treat and manage a variety of conditions related to the temporomandibular joint, including:

  • Temporomandibular Disorders
  • Arthrogenous (joint) disorders
  • Myogeneous (muscle) disorders
  • Developmental Disorders
  • TMJ Dislocation
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Neck Pain
  • Headaches
  • Post-surgical treatment

Musculoskeletal Evaluation

This includes an evaluation of your posture and its relation to TMJ dysfunction, muscle imbalances of the jaw and neck, and biomechanical evaluation of the temporomandibular joint, cervical spine and craniofacial region.

We individualize our treatment approach to your specific needs to allow you to return to daily activities and help you independently manage your symptoms. This may include the following:

  • Manual therapy: Joint and soft tissue mobilization, craniosacral therapy, and myofascial release techniques to improve cervical and temporomandibular joint mobility/range of motion, decrease muscle spasm/tightness, promote healing , and decrease strain to the temporomandibular joint and cervical spine.
  • Neuromuscular re-education: Techniques to improve muscle imbalances and decrease strain on the TMJ region and cervical spine.
  • Education: Instruction in diet and oral modification, and awareness training to decrease irritation to the tissues.
  • Self Management: Instruction to help you independently manage symptoms through a home exercise program, diet modification, and awareness of parafunctional activities and postural faults.

Expected Outcomes: Our goal is to treat temporomandibular disorders in 5-8 visits.
